Deuterocanonical
So now that I’m an Episcopalian, aka catholic lite, I get to read all the books of the bible. Take the book of Tobit, for example, the story of a man that overcomes all obstacles to obtain his love, and I’m told he does it with the help of angels. Sounds like the makings of a great graphic novel to me.

The Way I Loved: The Shade Tree
She, with red rose drenched lips, flower petaled tattoo on the sinew of her foot, was no match for your love. You assured me there was no one here but me and you, and what bound us was a certainty that only dies when the other hides behind fear–the worst kind of loathing. My eyes in your eyes, they are bluer still each time I see them, and the contour of your cheekbone I follow with my eyes to...

The Way I Loved
There are many things that I struggle with, but none is greater than the fear that I am not, nor cannot be, perfect enough to love. It has proved to be a debilitating fear that has broken the bonds of common love and eros. In times past, I’ve reacted as an animal in defense of my life, striking at, instead of embracing, the object of my love. To say that I wish I could undo the things I...

Merrymaking
If you’re in Athens, and you don’t want to sit around wallowing in self-pity like I am right now, please join me in forgetting our troubles downtown. Let us fashion from these shackles of sorrows an iron night of merriment.

No True Knowledge of Self?
If Plotinus’ argument is correct, we can have no knowledge of ourselves. At least, not as nous, perhaps only as dianoia. What follows, is that we are always reaching to understand through discursive knowledge, but never coming to know either ourselves or other things. The conclusion that I would assume, being a Thomist–and in some sense a Platonist–is that nous is divinely given, if we can...

– Stanley Fish made this argument, earlier this month, in an NYT editorial entitled “Does Philosophy Matter?” At bottom, his argument is that philosophy matters to philosophers … and to pretty much no one else in the world. Now it’s my job, I suspect, to disagree with Fish’s conclusion and so, of...

thatbeautifulday replied to your post: I Think My Professor Suckered Me Into Taking His Philosophy Class But Ahmaud, you are a good student. If I were your philosophy professor, I would want people who provide interesting input in my class, and you are excellent at that sort of discourse. Well, thanks Courtney! Although, I must say it is slightly overwhelming being in there with mostly PhD...

not-a-jot replied to your post: I Think My Professor Suckered Me Into Taking His Philosophy Class Which one? and ummm yeah you should so know better It was Dr. Halper…who tricked me. It’s an interesting class though, and I do want to take it so I’ll understand the arguments of the good doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas.

So I’m working at the circulation desk at the main library one day, and one of my philosophy professors comes in with his wife to renew some books he had checked out. While introducing me to the aforementioned wife, he also mentions that I’m a very good student. Of course, I’m taken aback by this compliment. On a later visit he suggests I take both of his classes this fall...

Sometimes People Have Shit Going On
So this guy I haven’t talked to in a couple of years finds me on Google+. Fine, I put him in an acquaintance circle, so no biggie, right? Wrong. I’m invited to do some video stuff, because he’s entered a few non-professional competitions and knows I’ve worked in film–the actual film industry unlike his amateur ass-and wants to know if I’ll join him. I say I’m...

Word of the day: eudaimonia
inthenoosphere: Eudaimonia or eudaemonia (Ancient Greek: εὐδαιμονία [evðaimoˈnia]), sometimes Anglicized as eudemonia (play /juːdəˈmoʊni.ə/), is a Greek word commonly translated as happiness, however “human flourishing” is a more accurate translation. Etymologically, it consists of the word “eu” (“good”) and “daimōn” (“spirit”). (via Wikipedia) I actually prefer the more encompassing...
