Wow.
This is exemplifies a great opportunity missed for The United States of America and its citizens. Instead of an ill advised attempt to spread democracy behind the limp hand of police military action, we—the citizens—could have given to those in need out of the overflowing bounty of our blessings. To receive from a caring hand in a time of great need is never forgotten. Instead of liberators, we may have been seen as a nation of virtuous citizens. Now, given a certain—and much needed—degree of self-introspection, we might instead see ourselves as philistines where our human brethren around the world are concerned. And though an argument may be made that we need to get our internal affairs in order first, we must remember that we are too intertwined in the affairs of the world to ever leave them alone for too long.
